Kainchi Dham is on the Nainital to Almora road, about 17 km from Nainital and 9 km from Bhowali. The ashram was established in 1964 and has a Hanuman temple at its centre.

The name has nothing to do with scissors. In the local dialect, “kainchi” means the two sharp hairpin bends in the road at this spot.

How to get there:

  • By train: Kathgodam is the nearest railway station, roughly 40 km away. The Nainital district’s official page says 43 km, while travel sites say 37 to 38 km. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours by road.

  • By road: Most routes go through Haldwani and Bhowali. From Delhi it is roughly 340 km. Read our guide: How to go to Neem Karoli Baba Ashram from Delhi.

Vrindavan: the samadhi

This is where Baba left his body on 11 September 1973. His Mahasamadhi Mandir is inside the ashram, along with a Hanuman temple.

The ashram is on Parikrama Marg, near Mathura Road. The address usually given is Baba Neem Karori Marg, Atalla Chungi Road, Gaushala Nagar, Vrindavan, 281121. A Mahasamadhi bhandara is held here every September on the anniversary. Most visitors arrive via Mathura Junction and take a taxi. Timings change with the season, so check before you go.

Neem Karoli (Neeb Karori) village, Farrukhabad

This is the village near Khimasepur that gave him his name. The ashram has a cave and a Hanuman temple whose murti, devotee sources say, Maharaj Ji made with his own hands. According to the Uttar Pradesh tourism announcement, he meditated in an underground cave here for about 12 years.

Devotee sources put the ashram less than half a kilometre from Lakshmandas Puri railway station, the station linked to the well-known train story.

Baba was born around 1900 in Akbarpur village in Firozabad district.

Prayagraj (Allahabad)

Many people search for a Neem Karoli Baba mandir in Prayagraj. I could not find a public temple there that reliable sources document, so I won’t name one.

What is documented is Baba’s connection with the city. From 14 July 1958, he stayed every winter with Dada Mukerjee, an economics professor at Allahabad University, and his wife Kamala at their “Red House”, 4 Church Lane. This went on until 1973.
